School Tour
As you know our school tour is taking place this Friday the 15th of June and we are going to the Zoo.
The children are to be dropped off to school at the normal time of 8.30am and picked up from school at the normal time of 2.20pm.
The children will have their school lunches with them that day, but as it is a long day we advise you to pack an extra snack and plenty of water/drinks.
**They are also allowed to bring a few treats with them.
***Keep an eye on the weather also and dress accordingly. Apply suncream on your child in the morning and pack a coat/raincoat encase of rain during the day as the tour is mostly outside.
If you have any questions please send me an email.
Thanks,
Rachel

Hi All,
For the month of June, homework has been reduced to just one or two things per week.
Reading will continue every week and it is important that you listen to your child reading every night. We have recently learned about the dictionary so please try to encourage your child to look up the meanings of new words when reading.
Last week the class had to draw a picture and write a sentence about their favourite place outside.
This week there is a little more written work. I have given the class a set of interview questions for them to ask a grandparent or an older family friend. I have also asked them to look up photo's that they might have of said person and any other information they can find.
Once they have gathered the information at home we will then put together their grandparent project in school.
They do not have to do the project at home. They are just gathering information. We will then organise the information on card during school.
If you have any questions please send me an email.
Thanks,
Rachel

** Biodiversity Week **
Hi all,
This week is Biodiversity Week in the school! The class will be a hive :-) of activity! The children are busy putting together their Bee projects and have been learning about the importance of recycling and the dangers of plastic. We have written a letter to McDonald's encouraging them to rethink their packaging and have provided them with some creative ways in which they could do so. The children have also started to think of ways they can reduce and reuse packaging and have started their waste free picnic posters.
This week the school is taking part in Spring Clean up on Wednesday. 1st class will be cleaning up along the river bank and beside the school from 9.30 - 10.30. If any parents would like to volunteer at this time please get in touch with me.
Also on Friday, Dave Treadwell will be coming in to talk to the class about pollinators and bees. Weather permitting this will take place in Fr Collins park. If parents would like to volunteer to help out at this workshop please contact me. It will take place around 8.50/9.00 till 10.20.
The weather is suppose to be good this week so please make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing i.e. sun hats and has sun cream on.

Biodiversity Week 21st-25th
**HELP SAVE OUR PLANET**
Hi All,
Biodiversity week is fast approaching and I wanted to make you aware of a few competitions taking place in the school.
- Photography competition - Encourage your child to get out into the locality and go on a little hunt to capture pictures of birds, pollinators, plants etc. Once you have decided on the photo you would like to enter sent it to Fiona at: belmayneetfiona@gmail.com
- Waste free lunch/picnic design - This will be started in school, but the children may have a chance to bring it home to finish it at home. A waste-free picnic is a fun way to learn about food waste, packaging waste, and the importance of cutting down on what we throw away. They will be creating a poster, the poster may contain photos of waste free picnic's, with some information on how to stop food and packaging waste. Email entries to belmayneetfiona@gmail.com or send them into me and I will passed them on to Fiona.
The class are currently learning about Bees and how important Bees are to the Earths biodiversity. They will be completing a mini project in class based on their findings. The school is also having a Spring clean day on the Wednesday and on Friday 1st class will be taking part in a Bee workshop. Photo's of their work will be put up on the blog.
Thanks,
Rachel

**Please Help - Water Hippo's**
If you would like to purchase a water hippo, please send in 1euro for a deposit. The overall price depends on how many families in the school buy one. Viv will then order the water hippos. When she has final numbers we will inform you of the left over balance due when they arrive. It should be under 5euro.
Thanks,
Rachel

International week
Hi All,
As you know the school are celebrating International week this week! We are having a great week! So far we have had a guest speaker in teaching us about some Spanish street games and an African drum lesson!
Tomorrow every class is dressing up in the colours of their chosen country. Our country is Russia so our colours are White, Blue and Red. If your child has any clothing that has these colours on them already encourage them to wear them in tomorrow. The prize is a fantastic fun day for the children so an effort is appreciated. Please so not go out and buy anything just use clothing or items you already have.
There is also an art competition running in the school based on the theme of
'Live Together, Learn Together'
Entries can be drawings, photos, sculptures, cartoons, animations and films. The deadline is 25th January. Entries can be handed into me, the office or emailed to belmayneetviv@gmail.com

Hi All,
Homework will continue in the same format as term 1. The children have the week to complete their booklets and the booklets will be collected on Friday.
Reading homework: Every Monday the children will pick a new book for the week. A reading log sheet has been sent home with the book. Please listen to your child read for around 5mins every night. Sign the log after each session and write in the page you have stopped on as a reminder. After the 5mins of reading ask your child some questions based on what they have just read.
In class we are starting a new reading program called PALS. PALS stands for Peer Assisted Learning Strategies. Each child will begin on the class reader 'The New Suit' and will read the book in pairs and act as a 'coach for each other.
International week: For international week which is taking place next week the class are learning about the country of Russia. In class we are completing a mini project on Russia, but I would encourage parents to try to start a discussion about Russia with your child and to look up for fascinating facts on Russia with your child.

Welcome Back! Homework
Hi all,
First of all I just want to say a very big thank you for all the lovely cards and gifts before Christmas, it was very kind. I hope you all had a wonderful break!
To ease everyone back in this week the children will just get one sheet of homework per night:
Tonight- Monday: Spellings Sheet
Tuesday: +4 tables sheet
Wednesday: Maths: Tens and Units Sheet
Thursday: Sentences
Homework will revert back to being given out weekly next week, along with new readers.
Wishing you all a fantastic 2018, full of happiness and good health.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me.
Thanks,
Rachel
